As is normally the case, this release was communicated well in advance, with Microsoft’s confirming the game’s arrival as part of itsXbox Game Pass April 2024 Wave 2 lineup announcement.Have a Nice Deathis now available across all non-Core tiers of the service, and can be played on both PC and the last two generations of Xbox consoles. This release further extends the already vast collection ofexcellent roguelike games on Xbox Game Pass. And whileHave a Nice Deathhas been widely touted as a stellar example of its genre, that’s not only on account of its gameplay qualities and high replay value. Instead, what makes this title truly memorable is its premise, which places players in the shoes of Death Incorporated CEO, Mr. Grim Reaper himself. The game starts with Death being buried in a mountain of paperwork caused by his minions, Sorrows, becoming a bit too enthusiastic in their efforts to make souls on Earth kick the bucket.
Each Sorrow represents a type of death, ranging from addiction and natural disasters to illness and war. The Sorrows act asHave a Nice Death’s major bosses, with all of them having their own unique environments and serving as personified, poignant commentary on life. The overall experience plays similarly toDead Cells, not least because of its fast-paced roguelike loop centered around conquering procedurally generated levels in between boss fights.
